The Why

What is mental fitness and why is it so important?

| By Camilo Sáenz-Moncaleano, PhD, Sports Psychology | January 29, 2020 |

Think for a moment about a person that you admire in your field of work. It could be anyone – that person that you always look up to, that person that you would like to become one day or a mixture of different traits that make up the ideal person in your field. Once you have someone on your mind, think about the characteristics that make this person unique.

There’s a very high chance you thought about things like “knowledgable”, “talented” or “experienced”. But I’m pretty sure you also thought of other characteristics like “the right mindset to face with difficulties” or “keeping your cool under pressure.” By realizing this, you’re aware that excelling in life is not only about knowledge or skills. Although these two are necessary, they are not sufficient to be great at any profession. There are several other elements that come into play, and many of them are related to what’s going on in our head and how we deal with our mind.

You can think about it the other way around: we have all witnessed those moments when we have asked ourselves “how is it possible that such a talented person is not able to unleash their full potential or is not able to perform at their best when needed?” Although they may have invested many years in their craft, they have the knowledge, the skills and all that is required to excel, something else – call it anxiety, lack of confidence, lack of focus, fears, emotions, etc. – was interfering with their performance. This is where mental fitness comes into play. Our job as mental coaches is to help people develop appropriate mindsets, deal with stressful situations, obtain all the required skills (in all aspects of their lives) to become better, among many other things.

Mental training is the science and art of helping people reach their highest levels of performance, while maintaining a balanced and healthy life. We use proven psychological skills that will help you increase your performance, not only for you to excel in your profession, but also to find a good balance in your life in general. Because balanced people become great professionals.

Although we would like to say that mental training is readily available to anyone, the reality is that this is not the case. But we’re working on changing that! Currently, mental coaches are becoming more and more common in sports, entertainment and business, among other professions. However, it is not that easy for anyone to find appropriate mental guidance or help. Currently, there are several apps, websites, training programs and many other resources to become better on the “fundamental” skills of your profession, yet the resources available on the mental side are scarce. This is why we have decided to create this space, where we can offer tools, skills and discussions to anyone who’s interested in working on their mental fitness and making it a part of their lives.

It is important to highlight that if you decide to work on your mental wellbeing, it doesn’t mean you have a problem or you’re “mentally weak” – it simply means that you’re willing to work on all aspects of your life to become the best version you can be, and yes: that means also working on the mental side.

As with any type of training, working on your mental fitness takes time, effort and commitment. But you have done it before – you have learned that the journey to get better takes effort, time and practice. Similar to physical training, mental fitness is not only a matter of going to one class, going for a run one day, or lifting weights from time to time. Mental fitness is no different from any other kind of training – it requires a constant and determined commitment to work on yourself. Furthermore, it means to work harder on certain areas that you have previously tried to avoid or that you think are difficult to change.

Hopefully, we sparked your interest to do whatever it takes to become the best version you’ve always wanted to be, by gaining the winning edge not only in regards to your professional skills and abilities, but also by cultivating the necessary mental fitness that will help you reach even higher levels of performance.

If you want to unleash your potential and live a better life, you have come to the right place.
